BIOGRAPHY
Lisa Jey Davis is the tenth
daughter -- in a family of eleven children -- born and raised in the
rugged, small southwestern town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the base
of the beautiful Sandia Mountains. Her mother is an Italian immigrant
and her father, of Western European descent, is from Dallas, Texas.
After graduation from high school, "LJ" (as she became known by friends
and colleagues) attended the University of New Mexico, majoring in
(among other things) journalism and communications.
At the age of nineteen, just before entering college, Lisa Jey became
pregnant with her first child. It was an unplanned pregnancy. Filled
with the wide-eyed innocence and with the influences of those good ole' “Catholic morals”
she’d been raised with, Lisa Jey decided to give birth to, keep and
raise her own child. Though the baby’s father wanted to marry, Lisa Jey
was skeptical of their chances for success and determined to go it alone
as a single mother.
Despite the difficult odds she faced in her new situation, Lisa Jey went
off to college with high hopes. Soon, childcare costs and the struggle
to find suitable living arrangements put a strain on her studies and the
time she had with her son. She learned very quickly how to make
excellent money through various small business ventures, but she was
never able to devote enough time to school or work to be highly
successful at either. During her freshman year of college, duties of
motherhood and the allure of business ownership drew LJ away from her
schooling.
Her first business, DATASAVERS, later known as AVISO Information
Management Services, met a dire need in the late 1980s for computer
services, desktop publishing, and marketing within her small
southwestern community. LJ seized this opportunity as a small business
owner to capitalize on her now flourishing talents in marketing and
public relations.
LJ’s creative instincts and knack for communicating effectively led to
writing for regional publications, television news segments, radio
programs, and later for televised entertainment industry events.
She became involved in several community and media organizations, and
her business was nominated for artistic awards in direct marketing
campaigns for writing and design, from the state chapter of the
Communication Artists Association.
Lisa Jey served as Vice President of Communications for the Coalition
for Responsible Government, a grassroots organization in New Mexico in
the mid to late 1990s. Additionally, she acted as lobbyist for select
issues important to the organization.
An extreme wanderlust and an adventurous spirit took LJ on a journey
into the all-too-unpredictable world of television production. After
interning as a production assistant for local news (operating
teleprompter, camera, and serving as sometime news desk assistant), LJ
went on to associate produce the news part-time at a local network news
station in Albuquerque. Careers in television were few and far between
in this little corner of the southwest, so LJ and her family packed it
up and headed to Southern California, where she began to pursue a career
in the exciting, yet just-as-unpredictable world of television
production in L.A.’s thriving entertainment industry.
When LJ was 36, her husband picked up and moved out of the state,
abandoning her and her two sons, who were ages six and seventeen. In the
midst of such torment, however, she landed her dream job, as a brand new
talent manager who worked with fashionistas, celebrities, and television
producers at MTV, CBS, the NFL and more.
She has worked with legends like Sting, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin,
and popular artists and celebrities like Sheryl Crow, Incubus,
No Doubt, Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and
Matthew Perry, just to name a few. Though her niche was in the
management of talent, after a few years LJ missed the creative work
she’d grown accustomed to as a marketing consultant , and she soon found
herself working more often in marketing and copy-writing than in
television production. One visit (just for fun) with a palm reader at a
trendy Hollywood party, reminded Lisa Jey of something she already knew:
She was a writer, and she needed to write.
LJ has been dubbed a MILF -- or a “hot” mom -- by many of her young
friends and acquaintances, both at work in television production and in
her social life. She has experienced what it is to live the life in what
some might consider the fast lane. She has been lucky enough to attend
some of the most exclusive concerts (as a VIP), events, and
after-parties in Los Angeles, New York and elsewhere. She has been flown
around the country to help produce some of the most widely watched
television programs in the country (Super Bowl concerts, MTV Movie
Awards and more), and she has enjoyed cocktails and toasted champagne
with some of the most fabulous celebrities of our time.
She has more than two decades of involvement in various women’s media,
religious, professional and political groups. Her
life’s work is to relate to and represent women for her clients as both
a freelance writer and a marketing/PR consultant. She knows what it is
to start anew in a dream job or career and can translate that into
real-life examples for women branching out anew in their lives.
For the past two decades, among her other creative pursuits, Lisa Jey
has continued to serve as marketing and public relations consultant to a
varied clientele, including such industries as Internet, technology,
professional services, and publishing. She has lent her expertise as a
freelance writer to various media outlets and publications such as
The Associated Press, Aspen Sojourner Magazine,
Mountain Parent, The New York Review,
Mountain Home Style, Fifth Column Magazine and
Albuquerque Monthly Magazine, as well as numerous other print
and online publications and blogs.
Once LJ chose to stick with what she did best—marketing, consulting, and
writing, this opened up the possibility of working anywhere USA. THE
anywhere for LJ soon became Aspen, Colorado, in addition to her home in
Los Angeles, where she now lives. She still owns and operates her own
marketing and public relations firm and works on various projects,
speaking, and lending her hand to the occasional television project.
A dynamic and gifted communicator, Lisa Jey packs her message with deep
insights, contemporary relevance, and humorous, real-life anecdotes,
whether writing for select columns or speaking to a group of colleagues,
congressmen, or to thousands at a women’s conference.
In 2007, Lisa Jey, with a strong desire to help other single mothers
achieve their goals and live the life of their dreams, began to write a
portion of her life story,
Ms. Cheevious in Hollywood - Memoir of a Hot Mamma,
which went on to win
Best
Unpublished Manuscript at the 2007 NY Book Festival.
Content to stay the course, knowing the adventures will only continue, she
relishes the journey, looking for opportunities to
inspire, be inspired, and make her mark wherever possible.
